Volume 15.1
In this issue we open with an article by John Kay who focuses his management experience on researching how organisations can bring social and spiritual parameters to bear on their performance. See pages 8 and 9 for a summary of how his Social Management Model engages moral, institutional, spiritual and relational strength to create a thriving organisational environment. Michael Cafferky reviews essays on Managing Time in a Global Culture. John Ellis takes a look at Ethics in Investment Banking, a book that needed to be written. See if you agree with him on page 18. Tim Harle considers The Reflective Leader and concludes that seasoned leaders can benefit from the books cumulative encouragement to ask questions rather than present a single big idea. John Kay reviews The Map of Meaning which presents a secular tool for sustaining our humanity in the world of work inspired by the authors faith. Gary Cundill engages his experience of working in a group of chemical, explosives, fibres and property companies to explore the impact of green behaviour on financial performance as well respecting social and environmental goals. He concludes that there are enough positive research findings to encourage Christians to continue their influence for good, working as stewards in these areas. The annual Faith in Business conference took place over Palm Sunday weekend in the pleasant surroundings of Ridley Hall. Sally Orwin reviews the diverse sessions which focused on the common theme of motivation in business. She also highlights the informal aspects of the conference that provided opportunity for encouragement and relationship building among the conference delegates. We follow this up with an inspiring article from Deepak Mahtani. He encourages empty nesters in their 50s and 60s to fully use the resources they may have built up during years of work – freedom with time, knowledge in many forms, financial and spiritual maturity – to look for God-given opportunities that He may use in a very special way. Finally, we have our regular contribution from Transforming Business in the form of an article on a new worldwide initiative to stimulate generosity through the entrepreneurial creation of wealth and resources: The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart. We hope you will agree, and draw inspiration and encouragement from the story of Namdeo Maharaj who, compelled by the grace of God, is using his talent to make a difference in the world.
